What is S.A.F.E. Alternatives® ?
S.A.F.E. stands for Self Abuse Finally Ends. It is a program that has been instrumental in my own recovery and has helped many others in their journey to overcome self-injury. The principles and philosophy of S.A.F.E. Alternatives® has been integrated into our group because they offer invaluable insights into recovery.
The Philosophy
The S.A.F.E. Alternatives® philosophy is based on the belief that while self-injury may provide temporary relief, it is harmful. Self-injury disrupts relationships, personal growth, and overall happiness. Importantly, S.A.F.E. Alternatives® believes there is no such thing as a “safe” or “healthy” level of self injury. However, it also emphasizes that self-injury is not an addiction over which someone is powerless for life. With the right support, people can stop injuring themselves and gain control. The program helps individuals realize that recovery is possible, and that improving the quality of life is a personal choice.
A History of Helping Thousands
S.A.F.E. Alternatives® began in 1986, founded by Karen Conterio and Dr. Wendy Lader, Ph.D., M.Ed. Since then, it has become a world-renowned treatment program. Currently S.A.F.E. Alternatives® is in St. Louis, Missouri, where they provide individual, family and group therapy under the leadership of Michelle Seliner, MSW, LCSW, Clinical Director and owner of S.A.F.E. Alternatives®
